About Cinnamon

The cinnamon tree (Cinnamomum verum) is a bushy tree that originated in Sri Lanka and Southern India. The name cinnamon is derived from the Greek word kinnamomon which was borrowed from the Phoenician term qinnamon. This was also obtained from Kayu Manis in Malay and Indonesian languages which translate to “wood with a pleasant taste”. All the different species of cinnamon fall under the genus Cinnamomum and the family Lauraceae or as it is popularly known as, the Laurel family. The tree is also referred to as the “true cinnamon tree”. Presently, cinnamon is cultivated in the following regions on large scale such as North America, Oceania, West Indies, South America, Australasia, Central America, and other parts of Asia.

The cinnamon tree can grow to a height of about 15 meters. Its leaves are green, elliptical, and grow to a maximum length of 20 centimeters. It has a smooth surface and has a pungent odor. The flowers are yellowish-green and emerge from the stalks in a clustered form. The fruits are tiny, usually 1cm long and produce only one seed once they mature. The bark of a mature cinnamon tree is brown and has a rough texture. When the cinnamon tree is young, the bark is normally smooth and light brown. The bark has a pleasant and very inviting aroma. The shoots of the mature cinnamon tree are harvested. The shoots are then carefully peeled to separate the outer bark from the inner bark. The inner bark is then dried to extend its shelf life. It is then ground into a powder and processed into cinnamon capsules. Cinnamon trees thrive in tropical areas with high temperatures and relatively high humidity. They grow best in nutrient-rich Sandy soils and require plenty of sunshine.

Cinnamon is one of the oldest species known to man. There are several times it has been referred to in the Bible. During the Exodus, Moses was required to mix myrrh, sweet calamus, Kinnamon, and olive oil to form a sacred oil that would be used in the anointing of the Ark of the Covenant. It is also alluded to in other verses in the books of Ezekiel, Proverbs, and Revelations. Cinnamon was first introduced in Egypt in 2000 B.C.E. by the Chinese. It was a very valuable commodity that made it the perfect gift for Kings and Gods. Pliny described the trading of the cinnamon spice across the Red sea. Indonesian rafts sailed using specific routes known as the cinnamon routes moving the commodity to Rome. Pliny stated that cassia or cinnamon had the same value as gold in weight. One would require almost 300 denars to purchase a single pound of cinnamon. This was a full years wage for a labourer. Around the 16th century, Portuguese traders set sail to Sri-Lanka, then known as Ceylon, to gain more control of the cultivation and production of this valuable commodity. The Dutch then followed in the 17th century and monopolised the cultivation and trade of Cinnamon. However, more areas around the world begun cultivating the cinnamon tree thus ending the monopoly.

CARE & MAINTENANCE

Vitamins are essential micronutrients needed in small amounts for body functions, with a balanced diet typically providing all necessary nutrients. Proper care and maintenance involve storing supplements correctly to preserve potency, understanding the distinction between fat-soluble and water-soluble types, and avoiding excessive intake.

Proper Care and Storage of Vitamin Supplements

To maintain the effectiveness and safety of vitamins, follow these storage guidelines:

  • Cool, Dry Place: Store in a cool, dry place (not in the bathroom or above the stove), as heat, light, and humidity can degrade supplements.
  • Original Container: Keep vitamins in their original, sealed containers to protect them from air exposure.
  • Child Safety: Store out of reach of children to avoid accidental overdosing.
  • Refrigeration: While most do not need refrigeration, certain oil-based supplements, like fish oil, may benefit from it to prevent oxidation.
  • Check Labels: Always check expiration dates and the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) on the label.
